EXCLUSIVE: “Heroes” Review
Ah…the benefits of being so close to Universal Studios…it really pays off. Last night, I got the chance to screen the premiere episode of NBC’s newest drama, “Heroes.” After last year’s preview of Surface was absolutely stunning, and seeing the series go down the drain, I was really going into this thing with mixed expectations. The end result–NBC has a hit on their hands. This time, I’m pretty sure of it. With a title like Heroes, and all sorts of different things in the world that revolve around them (comic books, movies, TV shows, stuff like that), many people are probably going to want to try this one out. And they won’t leave disappointed. If you’re eagerly anticipating the premiere, and do not want to hear anything about the storyline or anything like that, please, do not read on, as I’m going to get very indepth here.
The show revolves around this group of random people, scattered throughout the world, that have obtained these supernatural powers. We have a male nurse, who opens the first episode in a dream that he can fly–a dream that he has had several times in recent times. We also have a very attractive high school cheerleader, who can jump off the top of a 10 story building, or run through fire, and come out with not even a scratch. We also have a Japanese businessman, who has the ability to break the space-time continuum and transport to where ever he wants to. Then we have the Vegas showgirl, who sees very weird things in the mirror. We also have a guy who, when he’s high, is able to predict the future by painting very vivid and detailed images–all of which come to reality. The opening episode, “Genesis,” focuses on these people and how they find out about their powers.
You see, there was a theory in the show, developed by an Indian Professor, that the next step in human evolution would be these supernatural powers. This *may* cause controversy with both critics and viewers alike, because of the whole theory of evolution thing that started a few years back, but, in my opinion, they bring this theory to life in the most tactful way possible. The Indian Professor, after giving a lecture to his students about this theory, and getting caught doing so, he flees to New York, where he hopes he wouldn’t get caught. He becomes a cab driver, and runs into one of the new “Heroes.” He doesn’t realize it until after he gets out of the cab, but, when he does, he feels that his theory was true.
The special effects in this show are amazing. I wasn’t too sure what to expect when all of the action was unfolding, but, some of the effects were just absolutely astounding for network TV. Last year, Surface had some pretty awesome special effects, especially in creating the “Nimrod” character, but this just blows it completely out of the water. I’m not going to get too detailed here, because I would like for my readers to see it for themselves, but, at the same time, I can’t go on enough about how amazing they were. Get ready for some groundbreaking effects on television.
There are some things in this show that people may not want to watch–drug use and sexual references (well, maybe just the drug use part), but, not to a serious level. This is network TV, after all. The show was well put together, and didn’t focus too heavily on these themes, but, they are there, and some parents, especially, might not appreciate them for the children. In my opinion: This is going to be the show to watch this fall. Forget about Lost, forget about Prison Break, because this fall, Heroes should definitely take the crown. Heroes premieres Monday, September 25th at 9:00 PM EST on NBC.
Heroes Premiere Score: 10/10

I’ve seen the condensed version of the pilot online, so perhaps my initial reservations are premature, but based on what I’ve seen, I must respectfully disagree with your enthusiasm. I can’t comment on the special effects (namely because I’ve never really watched television for the effects as much as I have the plots, and vice versa for action movies), but I think the show is going to have to do a little more than just grab the audience with smoke and mirrors. My review is a little more detailed and may have some spoilers (appropriately marked, hopefully), but I would be curious whether you agree with my points or with the one comment of criticism to my central points (which you may or may not agree with). Take a look at it and let me know if I stand to be corrected by the second episode (part two of the pilot). I will agree on your point that it may be the best new show to watch for the fall season.
Now that it’s several weeks since you wrote your review, I’ve seen the show, and liked it. I will surely watch it for the next few weeks, and hope that it holds my interest. I especially like the Japanese “hero” and how unwilling he is to keep a low profile like many Japanese businessmen are expected to do. By the way, I loved Surface, and was very disappointed when they didn’t bring it back. But I see that the kid who played Miles in Surface has been popping up on House, and several other big shows lately, which is good. I always liked the way he played the relationship with “Nim.”
Heroes (and Surface) are the type of imaginitive show I look for, and it might surprise you to know that most of the viewers would consider me an “old lady.” But I always liked Sci-Fi, and age doesn’t have to change that, if producers keep coming up with innovative ideas and engaging characters. We’ll see how well they continue, but I think they’re off to a good start.
I dont know how to explain what it is that I saw but that show blew me away beyond belief. From knawing on my fingers to jumping for joy, this show is THE SHOW this season. The story line, the plot, the intricate questions, the weaved web of characters, and the special abilities they hold make this a truly inspiring series. I loved the priemere with all my heart and hope that it continues along the very same lines. A MUST-SEE. Two words; Simply Beautiful.
Roshan you’re a FOB from So-Cal probably and you don’t know jack shit about gripping plotlines or the fact that half of them couldn’t act worth shit. None of the “Heroes” really had anything to offer.
It steals from the best and does it so well.
“Misfits of Science” (but without the humor).
The first Clairmont “X-Men” cycle.
“The Others” (likely one of the best shows ever canceled.
And, most importantly:
“Wild Cards”
In fact, I hope this catches fir so we get the “Wild Cards” series.
Hi, I found an interesting site to download Heroes and watch it for free. You can watch it on a small screen like you would do it on a normal TV but via some of weird Chinese TV. Some episodes are free to download the are MPEG4 and AVI format with some TV4 logo. All for free.
They have got the first 10 episodes and apparently more to come, just something to watch out !
